MHEP Academic Achievements

“Since its small beginnings 14 years ago, the MHEP has helped over 250 Burmese migrant students qualify for their GED certificates and prepare for university studies. Of these, 180 have won scholarships and entered university, and 120 have already graduated and received their Bachelor degrees. Others take time off to work and build their CVs before applying for scholarships. MHEP has become a model for other migrant schools in Thailand who want to prepare their students for university studies.
MHEP students come from refugee camps and migrant worker families on the Thai side of the border, and represent a broad cross-section of the many ethnic and religious backgrounds in the poorer urban and rural communities in Burma. Many are the first in their families to even graduate from high school, so this is a huge accomplishment for them and for their communities, and it bodes well for the future development of their country.”

Ethnic Diversity

“Living and studying together for a year in the MHEP dormitories and classrooms, students from different backgrounds get to know each other well, and develop a better understanding of their own culture, too. This is a new experience for most, and it prepares them for the challenges of university life and the international workplaces where they will find themselves after graduation. MHEP students have been praised by scholarship donors for their strong social stability and academic success in the university environment.”

“The majority of our students study the social sciences of Education, Economics, and Politics in English-language degree programs at Thai universities. Some study in other ASEAN countries, such as Philippines and Vietnam, or go further afield to Hong Kong, India, and Japan. A few travel to the US or Australia to get their degrees, but almost all return to Burma or to the Thai-Burma border to work in NGOs, foreign investment businesses, or education. Many of our current teachers and administrative staff at EFF schools are our own graduates who have come back to work for the institutions that they love.”
